"T" was an Elk Hill Varina student who found himself homeless after losing his mother to illness. He was living on the streets without a roof over his head and attending our school during the day. With guidance and support, T was able to move into his grandmother's house. But at 18, that relief was short-lived.
T needed a plan that could support him for the long term. He found it through our workforce development program, Education for Employment. T took full advantage of having our EFE job placement specialist at his disposal. He was eager to consider all types of work, learning from experience what professions would suit him best. In the end, T chose to become certified by VDOT to work on road crews.
His experience helped him find work on a major construction project at an international airport, where he is proud to tell us that he now makes $100 a day! He has since attained his driver's license and has purchased his first car.
T went from not knowing where his next meal would come from to a confident young man who is still in touch with us asking about savings accounts and plans for the future. To us, T is what this program is all about.
